Description: UNITED STATES, 19TH CENTURY An American oil on canvas painting of the Privateer ship Louisa. The work depicts the U.S. Quasi-War privateer Barque Louisa fighting off a French vessel. The Louisa was an American merchant ship that gained notoriety during the Quasi-War after leaving Philadelphia. The Louisa's owners obtained a letter of Marque which authorized her captain to act against the French merchant shipping during the war. The work is signed lower right "P. Rooney".
Condition Report: The painting was relined at one time, it could benefit from a cleaning and re-varnishing. Overall good condition.
Dimensions: Oil on canvas measures 24" by 36", framed 28" by 40".
