Description: PAINTING/DRAWING -- LABRUZZI, C. Figure fatte da cinque punti obbligati. Right Hon.ble Countess of Bessborough. (Rome, c. 1788). W. 13 aquatint plates (incl. front.), printed in sanguine, all protected by a loosely inserted silky paper leaf. Fol. Slightly later red h. mor. extra w. mor. label on front side with the name "Lebzeltern" (Ludwig von Lebzeltern, 1774-1854, a close collaborator of Metternich and ambassador to Russia). Carlo Labruzzi (1748-1817) was a renowned Italian painter, draughtsman and engraver. He was one of the first Italian artists to use aquatints and used very often sanguine for proofs before letters. The reference to the five obliged points used by Labruzzi in this series of engravings points to his attempt to obtain effects of relief, as five point in the space individuate a sphere. The figures depicted are essentially mythological ones, mostly gods and demi-gods in different positions. - Thieme-Becker XXII, 172-73.
