More About this Item

Description: Indonesia, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of matched wooden carvings in low relief, showing a supernatural human figure with twin serpent/lizard/dragon creatures. These are almost certainly Makara, a mythical creature commonly depicted throughout India and Southeast Asia, associated both with Hindu and Buddhist iconography. Makara's head is terrestrial and body is aquatic; the stone sculptures of the creature at Candi Kalasan temple in Indonesia show a very similar form as are found on these wooden carvings. Size of each: 10.3" W x 4" H (26.2 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private LA County collection
