Lot 176: PAIR OF GUARDIAN LIONS
19 November 2016
Vienna, Vienna, AustriaLive Auction
Burned clay with painting. Nepal, approx. 17th to 18th century
Both temple lions stand on rectangular bases. The hinds are crouched, whereby the emphasis lies on the heads, chests and front legs. The heads are expressive with large eyes and bushy eyebrows, and their open mouths show their entire sets of teeth. The mouths and eyes are directed upwards. On the back of their heads is a pearl within a border. The manes with locks resemble chainmail armor. The tails run up their backs and end in a tassel on the mane. Around the bulky chests is a chain with a pearl. The muscular thighs on their front legs hold flaming embellishments which indicate the supernatural nature of the animals. The lion (simha) is not only a guarding, but also a herald. Due to the power of the lions exists a connection to Buddha which is known as “shakyasimha”, “the lion of (the house) Shakya”. Both lions were originally color coated, many remnants are still present. Good condition, one of the bases was reattached.
HEIGHT 18,6 AND 18,9 CM, LENGTHS 18 AND 18,8 CM
From the property of a high ranking member of one of the oldest German princely houses, afterwards collection Sohel Ch., New Delhi - Vienna
A noteworthy share of the antiques offered here – around 130 lots – originate from the Collection Sohel Ch., a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. The part of his collection, which we here offer, was mainly acquired in the art trade of Vienna. The chief reason for his collecting activity, which he perpetuated with considerable specialized knowledge, sense for quality and great committment, was to establish a private Asian museum in his native city of New Delhi. Because of severe illness, it was impossible for him to realize his plan and he thus decided to submit us the entire complex of his "Viennese collection" for sale.
