Description: ** A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit The Fowler Museum at UCLA **

Central America, Panama, San Blas Islands, Kuna/Cuna, 20th century CE. This is an interesting example of this folk art form created by Kuna women. Molas are cloth panels attached to the fronts and backs of women's blouses that are the cultural dress of Kuna women, along with gold nose rings, beaded arm and leg bands, and patterned wrap-around skirts. The design here is a series of flags, flying over a ship, including one with a swastika. This iconography probably reflects the influence of the Panama Canal on Panamanian life, showing a ship from the outside world arriving in Panama, with figures embarking/disembarking as it puts down its anchor. Size: 17.25" L x 14.75" W (43.8 cm x 37.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Morgan Collection, Santa Monica, CA.
