Description: 15 May 1899 PARIS. Action de F100. brown, buff, orange. #5000. No 1900. Colourful and lovely piece, with scenes, engraved by Charles Crabbe, of the mission's activities in Africa. Most decorative border and Jugendstil underprint. Marchand carried out many missions for the French army in north and West Africa in the late 19th century. The best-known was to Fashoda, on the upper Nile, which almost led to war with Britain. He returned a popular hero.
