Provenance: Antique pastel of an 18th Century lady. The pictures do not do her justice. She is incredibly well done. We actually thought we had a Vigee' Le Brun original. After consulting with my expert colleague from Sotheby's Mark Griffith-Jones, we believe this fine pastel to be done after the famous pastelist John Russell (1745-1806). We believe this to have been done in the late 19th century. Artist unknown. The original owner told us the was exhibited in the 1900 Paris World Exposition. Here is a copy of the letter from Mr. Griffith-Jones Dear Sir, Thank you very much for your email. My colleague Chris Apostle has forwarded it onto me, as I concentrate on works on paper at Sotheby’s. To my mind, your pastel is very unlikely to be by Vigée Le Brun. Further to this, I am of the opinion (from the photographs provided) that the work was drawn late into the 19th century. I think the artist was looking closely at the work of the British 18th Century pastelist John Russell (1745-1806) . It is interesting that the work was exhibited in the Paris 1900 exhibition. This was a very large scale exhibition, which presented a diverse selection of works. In terms of value, I would suggest that the work is decorative but worth no than $10,000 at auction. I hope that this email is useful and I look forward to assisting in the future.
