Description: 17 May 1853 50 MANCHE. PARIS/GRANVILLE. Action de F500. green, black. #6000. No 5604. Folds and many small edge-splits. Breton and Basque cod-fishermen have been working the Grand Banks, off Newfoundland for centuries; some think they landed on Americabefore Columbus. This company was formed in 1853 to acquire fromthe founders their fleet of 17 fishing-vessels, theirinstallations on the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, south of Newfoundland, and those at the Normandy port ofGranville, their base in France. Main office was in Paris(rue du Fbg Poissonnière, appropriately), with an office inGranville. The catch was doubtless brought into Granville forsale; the port was the principal centre for trade and shippingwith St. Pierre, and base for the French Grand Banks fisheries.Decorative underprint. Very early date for Canadian scrip.
