Description:
Title: Pindari Olympia, Pythia, Nemea, Isthmia. Caeterorum octo Lyricorum carmina, Alcaei, Sapphus, Stesichori, Ibyci, Anacreontis, Bacchylidis, Simonidis, Alcmanis, Nonnulla etiam aliorum
Author: Pindar - Pindar was an Ancient Greek lyric poet from Thebes. Of the canonical nine lyric poets of ancient Greece, his work is the best preserved. Quintilian wrote, "Of the nine lyric poets, Pindar is by far the greatest, in virtue of his inspired magnificence, the beauty of his thoughts and figures, the rich exuberance of his language and matter, and his rolling flood of eloquence, characteristics which, as Horace rightly held, make him inimitable." His poems however can also seem difficult and even peculiar. The Athenian comic playwright Eupolis once remarked that they "are already reduced to silence by the disinclination of the multitude for elegant learning". Some scholars in the modern age also found his poetry perplexing, at least up until the discovery in 1896 of some poems by his rival Bacchylides, when comparisons of their work showed that many of Pindar's idiosyncrasies are typical of archaic genres rather than of the poet himself. The brilliance of his poetry then began to be more widely appreciated. However his style still challenges the casual reader and he continues to be a much admired though largely unread poet. Condition / Notes: This scarce antique volume is bound in full vellum, with faded handwritten title and date on the spine and blind-stamped borders on the covers. The volume shows scattered soiling to the exterior. The binding is firm, and the text block is significantly toned. A signature dated 1713 is present to the front paste-down. The interior of the volume displays scattered spots of moisture, soiling, and foxing, but is exceedingly well preserved, considering its age. The text is adorned with illustrated initials, head pieces, and tail pieces.

This volume has been collated, and appears to be complete. There are 684 numbered pages, and 10 tailpieces.
