Pre-Columbian, Northern Chile, Arica-Parinacota region or Tarapaca, Inca period, ca. 1000 to 1532 CE. An attractive polychrome pitcher with a near-spherical lower body resolving to a short cylindrical neck and a strap handle joining rim to shoulder. The vessel is decorated on the rim and upper body with abstract motifs in black and cream hues on a red ground. These patterns while quite stylized and geometric seem to be inspired by animorphic or photomorphic forms found in nature. A wonderful example from this Altiplano Andean culture. Size: 5.5" W x 5.75" H (14 cm x 14.6 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Bill Freeman collection, Santa Fe, NM
