Description: Gold, river pearls, turquoise, and enamel. Crowned monogram "VIR". Hallmark "18" on the reverse. Length 80 mm, weight 5 g. In a gilt-stamped leather case with the crowned jeweller's inscription, "Collingwood & Co. to the Royal Family - 46. Conduit St. London." The owner's label "Monsieur le Lieutenant Colonel von Winterfeld" on the bottom. From the possessions of General der Infanterie (Lieutenant General) Hugo Hans Karl von Winterfeld (1836 - 1898). Winterfeld was the aide-de-camp (1871 - 1888) to Kaiser Wilhelm I and General Adjutant (1888 - 1898) to Kaiser Friedrich III and Wilhelm II. After ascending to the throne in 1888, Wilhelm II sent Winterfeld to the English court as his personal representative, to take soundings of the political situation. Cf.
