1864-Dated Civil War Period, Partially-Printed Document, for the Union town of Newark, New Jersey, $400 Substitute Bounty Payment Form, Choice Extremely Fine.
Original 1864 dated, Civil War Document is Signed, "James C. Meeker," measuring 4.75" x 8.5" and showing he received $400.00 from the town of Newark, NJ so he could pay for a Substitute replacement soldier for him in the Union Army draft. It is well printed in sharp deep black on a white wove period paper, blank reverse. At that time, by paying a "Substitute" Four Hundred Dollars, you could also buy your way out of the Union Army Draft. Overall, it appears extremely nice and perfect for display.
