Lot 234: RARE LARGE MULTIFIGURED RELIEF WITH DEITIES AND LIONS
19 November 2016
Vienna, Vienna, AustriaLive Auction
Tropical timber. Southern India, 19th century
A large relief panel primarily presenting sections of temple installations in South-Indian style with the goddess Lakshmi in the center flanked by elephants. She is seated in a “royal pose” on a throne, with large round breasts and holding lotus flowers in her hands, two further hands showing gestures granting protection and wish-fulfillment. The adorned elephants (Gaja) hold large water vessels up with their trunks with which the goddess, a consort of Vishnu, is being showered. This popular scene – considered a symbol of luck – is called Gaja-Lakshmi. On the outer sides, standing between pillars, are plump feminine figures swinging large fronds. In the uppermost part of the depiction between the temple-roofs with several sections, are two kirtimukha masks in the style of gopuram. These mysterious zoomorphic masks are formed as lion heads. They are a popular motif found at portals and serve to protect the entrances of houses. Rich with detailed ornamental carvings, linear decorations with floral motifs, pearled etc. Remnants of old paint with a worn appearance on the wood due to age. A vivid and decorative work!

From a Viennese private collection, afterwards collection Sohel Ch., New Delhi – Vienna
A noteworthy share of the antiques offered here – around 130 lots – originate from the Collection Sohel Ch., a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. The part of his collection, which we here offer, was mainly acquired in the art trade of Vienna. The chief reason for his collecting activity, which he perpetuated with considerable specialized knowledge, sense for quality and great committment, was to establish a private Asian museum in his native city of New Delhi. Because of severe illness, it was impossible for him to realize his plan and he thus decided to submit us the entire complex of his "Viennese collection" for sale.
