Description: Metal, silver, gilding, inlays. China, presumably Liao-Dynasty, approximately 10th-11th century

This pair of gloves is an exceptional rarity and consist of fine, dense wire netting, which is gilded. The gloves crafted with a fine wire gauze in gilt, rendered as one piece from wrist to fingers, the wrist with delicate twisted wire border, and with decorative patterns bearing tiny colorful gemstones (glass or mineral stones, losses), the back of each glove decorated with hovering phoenix in gilt metal, contoured of twisted wire, encrustations, remnants of soil and patches of verdigris. Dr. Richtsfeld from the Voelkerkundemuseum in Muenchen (Ethnological Museum Munich) has confirmed the authenticity of this pair of gloves dating to Liao Dynasty, see note under the no. 21.
LENGTHS 20 AND 20,5 CM
From a German private collection, afterwards collection Sohel Ch., New-Delhi - Vienna

A noteworthy share of the antiques offered here – around 130 lots – originate from the Collection Sohel Ch., a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. The part of his collection, which we here offer, was mainly acquired in the art trade of Vienna. The chief reason for his collecting activity, which he perpetuated with considerable specialized knowledge, sense for quality and great committment, was to establish a private Asian museum in his native city of New Delhi. Because of severe illness, it was impossible for him to realize his plan and he thus decided to submit us the entire complex of his "Viennese collection" for sale.
