Lot 178: RECLINING GAZELLE

Vienna, Vienna, AustriaLive Auction
Fire-gilded bronze. Nepal-Tibet, approx. 18th to 19th cent.
This particularly fine bronze probably originates from a scene with the Wheel of Tradition dharmacakra. Buddha initiated with his proclamation the movement of the "teaching wheel", which took place in a gazelle grove of Sarnath at Benares. In the symbolic depiction, usually two gazelles stand below the wheel. The spiritedly worked animal in reverent pose stretches its head upward; on the base of the four shanks is respectively a powerfully carved volute. Very good condition.
