Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 27 5/8 x 40 7/8 in./70 x 103.7 cm Illinois Litho., Chicago "Billed as the ‘World's Most Marvelous Lady Gymnast,' Lillian Leitzel commanded top billing longer than any other circus performer in history. Born in Breslau, Germany, in 1892, [she] first came to the United States in 1910 with the Leamy Ladies, a troupe of trapeze artists. She made her solo debut in the center ring of the Ringling show in 1915. ... A charismatic persona combined with a publicized personal life made Lillian Leitzel an American celebrity ... Performing in Copenhagen ... on February 13, 1931 [she] fell more than twenty feet to a concrete floor [and] died two days later” (Strobridge, p. 222). (circus)
