Iconic American Abstract Expressionist Sam Francis’s love of vivid color and trademark penchant for lively, gestural brushstrokes come to the fore in “Untitled (SF75-1129),” a unique work on paper. Here, swaths of deep purple combine with highly textural, frenetic splotches of bright blue and green, creating an image imbued with both a calming and distinctly energetic quality. With its harmonious use of color and masterful conveyance of vitality, “Untitled (SF75-1129)” beautifully embodies the lyrical hand for which Francis is known.
Sam Francis (American, b.1923 - d.1994)
California-born Abstract Expressionist painter Sam Francis, is regarded as one of the 20th century’s leading interpreters of color and light. His first works were influenced by the Abstract Expressionism of Mark Rothko, Arshile Gorky, and Clyfford Still, but he quickly developed his own colorful abstract style after moving to Paris in 1950. In addition to New York Abstract Expressionism, his work holds references to Color Field painting, Chinese and Japanese art, French Impressionism, and his own California roots.
