Noted for his ability to convey a vast array of emotion through the careful use of color and shape, Sam Francis is widely considered one of the 20th century’s foremost American Abstract Expressionist painters. The unique “Untitled (SF76-023)” is a wonderful example of the artist’s strengths, with its liberal application of paint in highly evocative reds and oranges, backed by gentle blues and greens, as well as its restrained rectangular form. Francis’s careful attention to composition and masterful use of vibrant, emotive hues combine to create a work brimming with tension, granting the image an impression of remarkable intensity.

Sam Francis (American, b.1923 - d.1994)

California-born Abstract Expressionist painter Sam Francis, is regarded as one of the 20th century’s leading interpreters of color and light. His first works were influenced by the Abstract Expressionism of Mark Rothko, Arshile Gorky, and Clyfford Still, but he quickly developed his own colorful abstract style after moving to Paris in 1950. In addition to New York Abstract Expressionism, his work holds references to Color Field painting, Chinese and Japanese art, French Impressionism, and his own California roots. Throughout a long and prolific career, Francis created thousands of paintings as well as works on paper, prints, and monotypes.
