The unique “Untitled (SF76-023)” is a wonderful example of the artist’s strengths, with its liberal application of paint in highly evocative reds and oranges, backed by gentle blues and greens, as well as its restrained rectangular form. Francis’s careful attention to composition and masterful use of vibrant, emotive hues combine to create a work brimming with tension, granting the image an impression of remarkable intensity.
Sam Francis (American, b.1923 - d.1994)
California-born Abstract Expressionist painter Sam Francis, is regarded as one of the 20th century’s leading interpreters of color and light.
