SAVIOLI, G. Dissertazione sulla causa fisica dell’aurora boreale. Milan, G. Marelli, 1790. 42, (2) pp. 4°. Old wrps. (Spine slightly worn). First Italian edition, appeared in Latin the previous year in Bergamo. This edition appeared also in the “Opuscoli scelti sulle scienze”, a periodical directed by C. Amoretti and F. Soave. Giovanni Battista Savioli (1748-1823) was a professor of mathematics in Milan. The book is a concise essay on the origins of the aurora borealis, with references to several prominent scientists, including Newton. The hypothesis of Savioli is that the aurora borealis is due to the reflexion and refraction of solar light on the ice surfaces in the Polar regions. He claims that this theory is a direct consequence of the application of Newton’s theory of light. - Rare.
