More About this Item

Description: Northern Europe (Germany / Low Countries), Migration Period, ca. 300 to 700 CE. A finely shaped example of a Saxon iron dagger, long and triangular in shape, with a thin triangular tang and small, rectangular iron guard attached to the single piece of blade and tang. The Saxons lived in a constantly in-flux cultural milieu, and many of them traveled long distances over land and by ship and encountered many different groups of people; in this fluid time period, it is easy to imagine that the average Saxon would have liked a small iron dagger to carry on his or her person. A Size: 9.4" L x 1.4" W (23.9 cm x 3.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages. Ex-Estate of John Piscopo.
