Details: This signed print from Maurice Sendak's Caldecott Medal Award Classic Where the Wild Things Are was manufactured in 1971 as part of a series of 19 images selected from eight different titles by Mr. Sendak and newly rephotographed from the original artwork at the Sendak Archives, Rosenbach Museum & Library, Philadelphia, to allow friends and collectors the opportunity to acquire top-grade reproductions to hang on their walls without having to mutilate any of this books.
These prints were originally issued unsigned, but a select few were autographed by Sendak for friends and occasionally for concessionary sale; this particular print was signed in ink, lower right, for Sendak's agent, from whom the print comes to us.
This print is entitled The Morning After and measures approx. 11"x24".
Maurice Bernard Sendak (1928-2012) was an American illustrator and writer of children's books. He became widely known for his book Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963. Born to Jewish-Polish parents, his childhood was affected by the death of many of his family members during the Holocaust. Besides Where the Wild Things Are, Sendak also wrote works such as In the Night Kitchen, Outside Over There, and illustrated many works by other authors including the Little Bear books by Else Holmelund Minarik.
