Portland, ME, USALive Auction
Description: School of Jean-Antoine Watteau Fr. 1684-1721 Appear to be after L?Assemble galante and F?tes venitiennes A pair of oils on canvas 18 1/2 x 25 in. 47.0 x 63.5 cm I believe that both are fairly direct adaptations of Watteau compositions. The first, known only through an engraving, is L?Assemble galante; the other, with the woman dancing, is after Watteau?s F?tes venitiennes now in Edinburgh ?1 which is a vertical painting but here transformed into a horizontal format. ...Martin Eidelberg in an email to Barridoff Galleries Dr. Eidelberg is generally recognized as the leading authority on the work of Watteau. He has published widely on the drawings and paintings as well as on many of the artists associated with him, particularly Claude Gillot, Claude III Audran, Pierre Antoine Quillard, and Phillipe Mercier. He is currently preparing a catalogue raisonn? of Watteau?s paintings, A Watteau Abecedario.
