Description: ( Sir Thomas, editor ) The Works of Shakespear , second edition, 6 vol., engraved frontispiece and 38 engraved plates by Gravelot after Hayman, engraved tailpieces, offsetting and foxing, a little soiling, some hinges crudely repaired, later half calf, worn, boards and a few peripheral ff. detached or joints splitting, spines scorched, 4to, Oxford, [divisional titles dated 1770; general title dated 1771] . Sir Thomas Hanmer (1677-1746), 4th Baronet, Speaker of the House of Commons 1714-15, founding governor of the Foundling Hospital. Esteemed on its first publication, the Hanmer edition is now thought by turns slapdash or derivative (the derivations being from Pope and from Theobald). Hanmer was satirised in The Dunciad as an incorrigible servant of Dulness.
