Description: 8 April 1931 SHANGHAI. Shares of 5 Taels (Hongkong Dollars 5). brown. No 800. Two repaired edge-tears. The company was controlled by British settlers living in Shanghai. That community were property owners and land speculators, and their lives were tied up with the existence of the British concession and extra-territorial privileges. The amusing design shows a Chinese workman painting the wall of a traditional house. The company was incorporated in Hong Kong. Issued to Eleager Silas Kadoorie Esq. He was an Indian-born Jewish business man, philanthropist and leading member of one of the wealthiest families in Asia. He made fortune in banking, rubber plantations, electric power utilities and real estate operating from Shanghai and Hong Kong.
