Description: Signed Libretto for Paul Hindemith’s Choral Work, “Das Unaufhörliche” ********** HINDEMITH, PAUL. (1895-1963). German composer, and one of the outstanding figures in 20th-century music theory and composition. Signed libretto. (“Paul Hindemith”). 1p. Small 4to. N.p., N.d. Printed German lyrics for Das Unaufhörliche, Hindemith’s oratorio with text by the German poet Gottfried Benn. ********** Hindemith performed frequently as a violinist, but by the mid-1920s he was well-known in the Frankfurt music scene for his compositional skills and well on his way to becoming the leading German composer-performer of his generation. Rejecting Arnold Schoenberg’s 12-tone system, Hindemith created his own harmonic system, which used the principles of traditional tonality. His masterworks include Kammermusik, Symphonic Metamorphoses on a Theme by Weber, Sinfonia Serena, and Die Harmonie der Welt. ********** Composed for soloists, mixed choir, boys’ choir, and orchestra, Das Unaufhörliche was first performed in Munich in 1931. The work, whose title translates in English as The Incessant or The Perpetual, explores the idea of change and permanence. Benn’s abridged lyrics were included in his 1936 Selected Poems. ********** Signed diagonally across the front cover in blue ink. With light dust staining and wear and in very good condition. Uncommon in this format.
