Description: Ledger leaf, dated 1791, signed twice (front and back) by William Ellery. 14.25" x 6". Horizontal creases, moderate age-tone, Very Good. ********************************* William Ellery was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Rhode Island. Later in his career, and until his death, he was the first customs collector of Newport, Rhode Island. The present leaf, taken from a ledger, is an "Account of fees received in the port of Warren and Barrington (Rhode Island) to be divided betwixt the Collect or Naval Officer and Surveyor." The same text appears as the heading on both sides, followed by a list of names, locations, and amounts - signed by Ellery at the bottom, recto and verso.
