Description: Artist: BEN SHAHN (1898-1969) Size: 27 5/8 x 39 1/2 in./70 x 100.4 cm Istituto Grafico, Tiberino For the eighth annual Spoleto Festival, the famed convocation of musical, dramatic, and artistic talent in Italy each summer, attention would focus on New American Poetry and, in particular, the New York School. Frank O'Hara was consulted for a participant list; although he couldn't personally attend, he created a virtual murderer's row of American poetical talent who would travel to Perugia in the summer of '65: Lawrence Ferlinghetti, John Ashbery, Charles Olson, and Ezra Pound. Yevgeny Yevtushekno also made a last-minute appearance, after being withheld by Soviet authorities on account of Pound's fascist propagandizing during World War II.
