Lot 67: "Summer Morning", Gertrude Rogers
12 November 2016
Ashburn, VA, USALive Auction
Description: "Summer Morning" is an oil on board painted by Gertrude Rogers in 1959. It depicts a rooster standing on a fence-post in the foreground also features a hen and 4 chicks in the background, along with a box carriage and a horse-drawn thresher. These are situated in front of a tree and a barn, and in the far distance a sleepy rural town is just visible. Gertrude Rogers, born September 4, 1896, in Ionia, Michigan began her artistic career late in life; although she did not begin her painting activity until 1946, encouragement from her family and support from a Michigan State University professor gave her the determination to press on with her talents. She works in the naïf folk art style, and her subject matter draws heavily from her childhood memories of growing up on a farm. It is signed and framed. Including the frame, the dimensions are 28 1/2 inches wide by 25 1/2 inches high. Without the frame the dimensions are 24 inches wide by 20 inches high. All measurements are approximate.
