SUSAN DERGES (1955- )
The River Taw (Leaf Fall). Unique dye-destruction and photogram print, the image measuring 66x24 inches (167.6x61 cm.), flush mounted to aluminum, with Derges' signature and the printed title, date, and the notation "unique," on a label, on mount verso. 1998
From The Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco, California; to the Present Owner.
Derges created the images in this series at night in Dartmoor, England. The other-worldly, mesmerizing images of the river's ripples and floating debris were made by placing large sheets of light-sensitive cibachrome paper in a box constructed with aluminum and submerging it in the River Taw. When she was ready to make an image, the top of the box was removed, a flash set off, and the sheet exposed.
