Lot 315: TABACOS DE FILIPINAS, CO. GENERAL DE
29 October 2016
Brussels, BelgiumLive Auction
Description: 2 January 1882 BARCELONA. Part de Fondateur. brown, black. No 239. Large-format piece, with a superb border of allegorical scenes of ladies, children, ship, train and lots of cigars. The main aim of the company was the cultivation, purchase, processing and sale of tobacco products in the Philippines, and their export, mostly to Spain. The company had large plantations of its own, especially in Cagayan province, and also financed small growers, buying their crops. Had a distribution network in Spain. In the 17th century Philippine tobacco was regarded as the second finest in the world (after that of Cuba) but by this date was less well regarded. The Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas was one of the founders, and there was French capital in the company. Should NOT be confused with the vertical share, which was widelyreprinted in the 1980s.
