More About this Item

Description: 1 November 1853 LOUISIANA. NEW ORLEANS. 7% Bond of £250. black, brown. No 693. The company was formed to build a railway across the Tehuantepec isthmus (the narrow part of southern Mexico) to give a link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This bond, and the others of this issue, were given to the English company, contractedto build the line. The line was never built by this company. It was built in the early 20th century, and still exists, but soon lost its importance, due to the opening of the Panama Canal. The Tehuantepec Railway bonds of 1909, for the German-led loan, are well-known to scripophilists. This piece is a typical, very decorative, American bond of the period, with vignettes of shipping, train, sailor and various lovely ladies.
