In 1781) he was briefly President of the Continental Congress and was a supporter of the Articles of Confederation, which he signed. He worked to obtain the ratification of the Constitution by Pennsylvania and was a member of Pennsylvania's state constitutional convention. McKean was also Governor of Pennsylvania during 1799-1808.

Timothy Matlack (1736-1829), was a brewer and beer bottler who emerged as a popular Revolutionary leader. He served as Secretary of Pennsylvania during the war, and was a delegate to the Second Continental Congress in 1780. Matlack was also an accomplished calligrapher and engrossed the Declaration of Independence on parchment.
