Lot 82: Tom Hulett's "ELVIS PRESLEY SHOW" Gold Metal ID Card - Elvis Presley's Tour Promoter
29 October 2016
Memphis, TN, USALive Auction
These special metallic badges were created by Elvis for only his inner circle and close associates and friends, of which Tom, as tour promoter, was certainly a member. The badge reads in full, "THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT TOM HEWLITT [sic] IS A MEMBER OF THE ELVIS PRESLEY SHOW" and then is further engraved with "CONCERT WEST PROMOTER" in the second blank area. The "TCB" logo and Elvis Presley facsimile signature round out the front design of the card. The reverse still has most of its original sticker that reads, "Quality Designers and Manufacturers APOLLO TROPHIES 2927 W. Olympic Blvd. L.A., Calif. 90006 (213) 389-6771." The card was acquired directly from Tom Hulett by the consignor and a letter from the consignor stating in part, "In the 1980's I had sought out and met Tom Hulett of Concerts West. During this meeting I acquired several wonderful Elvis items from Mr. Hulett, and in his most charming way he indicated that I had cleaned out his entire cache of items once given to him by Elvis Presley. Tom Hulett, however, was a super-smooth quintessential salesman. Perhaps when he said 'You just bought everything. You got it all.', he meant that I had just acquired everything he had at his office at that time. Either way, some additional items have surfaced since the 1980's that came from Tom Hulett. One of these additional items is this golden Elvis Presley Show id card. It suddenly showed up in an online auction one day and from the accompanying pictures I immediately recognized it as an authentic ID card originally supplied to Elvis by Apollo Trophies in Los Angeles. An interesting aspect of Tom's card is that his last name is spelled incorrectly. It makes one wonder whether whoever placed the order with Apollo had given them a previously prepared list of names (which then might all have been spelled correctly) or whether the list was compiled on the spot in the shop and the spelling of Tom's last name had been a best guess attempt." The badge measures 2 1/4 by 3 1/2 inches (5.72 x 8.89 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
Condition Report: The card shows signs of heavy use, with scuffing and wear on the front and reverse. Roughly one third of the sticker has worn away. Very Good condition.
