TOMOKO SAWADA (1977- )
Bride. Lambda prints (30) arranged in a grid, each image measuring 2 1/2 inches (6.4 cm.) square, the original and custom whitewashed handcrafted frame 18x21 inches (45.7x53.3 cm.), with Sawada's signature and the edition notation 10/20, in ink, on a label on frame verso; the Rose Gallery label also on frame verso. 2008
From the Rose Gallery, Santa Monica, California; to the Present Owner, in 2010. The Rose Gallery label on frame verso indicates that this print was in the collection of the artist.
Sawada's work focuses on the particular tension between outer presentation and inner identity. Using her own body as template, Sawada's subtle shifts in expression and her more obvious pairing of traditional Japanese and Western bridal clothing ask the viewer to rethink shifting identities and the power of the camera.
