Neuilly-sur-Seine, 22 juin 1849-27 octobre 1853. Ens. environ 228 p. in-8 (dimensions diverses), suscriptions et 34 enveloppes.

Précieuse correspondance, encore inédite, de Tryphina-Augusta Holmes à Alfred et Lydia de Vigny. Les Vigny et les Holmes s'étaient rencontrés en 1827 sur la plage de Dieppe et les deux épouses devinrent d'intimes amies. Toutes les lettres présentées ici, à l'exception de celle du 22 juin 1849, datent du séjour des Vigny au Maine-Giraud de juin 1850 à novembre 1853, période durant laquelle Tryphina-Augusta avait été chargée de réexpédier le courrier du poète, et se fit un devoir, et un plaisir, de conter par le menu à ses amis les anecdotes parisiennes et notamment celles du quartier du Roule. Comme l'écrit Loïc Chotard : "Mme Holmes sait raconter avec talent et brio les mots d'enfant de sa fille Marianne-Augusta, la rivalité des deux sœurs cousins des Vigny, Fanny de Peyronnet et Bessie de Perpigna, ou les aventures de Coco, le perroquet de Lydia resté en pension à Paris ; elle se complaît volontiers au récit des faits divers sordides (un médecin qui laisse sa maîtresse se suicider, un jeune couple désespéré qui se tue, etc. ) et devient intarissable quand les protagonistes sont connus d'elle ou de son correspondant (notamment à propos de l'accident mortel de la duchesse de Maillé ou du voyage en Californie du jeune Arthur de Bérenger qui va devenir chercheur d'or). Tous ces petits riens, qui remplissent souvent huit ou douze pages, fournissent parfois des indications précieuses pour la biographie de Vigny. Dans tous les cas, ils constituent une sorte de coupe pratiquée in vivo dans le cerveau d'une dame de la bonne société incessammentballotée par le mouvement de l'actualité".

On joint en outre l'enveloppe d'une lettre de Tryphina-Augusta Holmes à Vigny ([Neuilly-sur-Seine, 7 décembre 1851] ; la lettre qu'elle contenait est aujourd'hui conservée à la Bibliothèque nationale de France), l'enveloppe d'une lettre du poète à son amie ([Compiègne, 22 octobre 1856]), deux lettres d'Augusta Shearer, mère de Tryphina-Augusta, à Lydia de Vigny (Neuilly-sur-Seine, 18 décembre 1851, 17 janvier 1852 ; ens. 7 p. in-8 et 2 enveloppes) et deux lettres d'Augusta Holmes (1847-1903), fille de Dalkeith et Tryphina-Augusta, l'une à Alfred de Vigny, son parrain, l'autre à Lydia de Vigny ([Versailles], 18 juillet 1860 et [20 décembre 1860] ; 8 p. in-12 et in-8).
Quelques manques, déchirures et pliures marginales, certains atteignant le texte. Une lettre endommagée semble incomplète. Quelques brunissures.
