19 November 2016
Vienna, Vienna, AustriaLive Auction
Kacho-e. Original color woodblock print, published in the 1920´s. Bird and Japanese Wild Squash Vines. Signed: Kogyo (耕漁). Seal. Publisher: Matsuki Heikichi.
Kogyo was the adoptive son and student of Yoshitoshi. His artist activities in color woodblock art primarily focused on theme No. 3 comprehensive series with scenes from classic No-games were the result of this work. Published were the excellent printed sheets between 1898 and 1934 as portfolio works with Matsuki Heikichi. Beside depictions of No-scenes are also several outstanding, delicately designed Kacho-e from Kogyos brush. Because only published in small editions, they are relatively rare. Like all No-depictions published, also this Kacho-e is from the publishing house of Daikokuya, suggesting an exclusive contract of Matsuki Heikichi with the painter.
