Lot 66: "Turtle", Gertrude Rogers
12 November 2016
Ashburn, VA, USALive Auction
Description: This oil on board painting from 1954, titled simply "Turtle", depicts a turtle in a fantastical landscape of autumn leaves and a wildly exaggerated willow tree. A trestle bridge and dirt road are barely visible in the distance. Gertrude Rogers, born September 4, 1896, in Ionia, Michigan began her artistic career late in life; although she did not begin her painting activity until 1946, encouragement from her family and support from a Michigan State University professor gave her the determination to press on with her talents. She works in the naïf folk art style, and her subject matter draws heavily from her childhood memories of growing up on a farm. It is signed and framed. Including the frame, the dimensions are 20 3/4 inches wide by 16 3/4 inches high. Without the frame the dimensions are 15 1/2 inches wide by 11 1/2 inches high. All measurements are approximate. Condition: It is in good condition. Provenance: From a Virginia estate. High resolution images can be found at: https://file.ac/he9J4qbKGZQ/
