More About this Item

Description: FROST, ROBERT. (1874-1963). American poet and four-time Pulitzer Prize winner, author of such beloved poems as The Road Not Taken, Mending Wall and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. Signed offprint entitled “The Four Beliefs,” printed in a limited edition of 250 unnumbered copies by the Ray Nash Graphic Arts Workshop at Dartmouth. (“Robert Frost”). 4pp. Small 4to. N.p., N.d. Inscribed to Dartmouth Italian professor GEORGE WOOD (?-?) above a tipped-in, black-and-white image of Frost that faces the printed poem. Crane D6. ********** In 1930, Frost delivered a talk at Amherst College entitled “Education by Poetry”, that was revised and published in the February 1931 Amherst Graduates’ Quarterly. An extract of the talk was published separately as “The Four Beliefs,” by the Ray Nash Graphic Arts Workshop at Dartmouth. Nash, a professor of graphic arts and calligraphy, ran the Graphic Arts Workshop from 1937-1970. ********** As a student, Frost attended Dartmouth College for a mere two months before dropping out. Nonetheless, as a celebrated poet, he established close ties with the institution, which awarded him two honorary degrees, among other accolades. In 1943, he became Dartmouth’s George Ticknor Fellow in the Humanities, which involved teaching one course that, “consisted of him talking about whatever was on his mind at the time – politics, poetry, philosophy, farming, and so forth. In an interview, a Dartmouth administrator at the time recognized the value Frost added to the school’s reputation: ‘Frost was the only poet most Americans had ever heard of. They read his work, and admired him. He was an institution…’ Frost would stay at Dartmouth for the next six years,” (Robert Frost: The Life of America’s Poet, Wooten). ********** Scattered, uneven toning and a tiny chip at the bottom edge. In very good condition. Uncommon in this form.
