Company formed in 1900, for shipbuilding and ship-repairing. There was an important German influence. Among initial shareholders were the Bremer VulkanSchiffsbau und Maschinenfabrik, of Vegesack, Bremen, from where it probably got its name. Other German shareholders were G.H. Plate, of Bremen, president of Nord Deutscher Lloyd, B. Loose, banker of Bremen, F.T.L. Achelis, F.E. Schütte and F.A. Ebbeke,Bremen businessmen. Also participating were the Banque d'Outre-Mer, of Brussels (MM Balser & Havenith), and the Cie Anversoise d'Entreprises Coloniales et Industrielles (MM de Bary & Michelis).
