Seated Woman in a Kimono
Oil on canvas
30 x 24 inches
Richard H. Love, William Chadwick (1879-1962): An American Impressionist, Chicago: The Richard H. Love Gallery, 1978, p. 16 illus.
The passion for Japanisme that swept through American art in the 1890s is exemplified in Seated Woman in Kimono. Taking an approach inspired by Whistlerian aestheticism, Chadwick offset the broad sweep of his subject's flowered garment against the compact geometry of her space, creating as much a decorative conception as a rendering of his subject. Chadwick's Impressionist brush handling serves to suppress individual detail, adding to the overall harmony of the image.
A native of Yorkshire, England, Chadwick emigrated to the United States in 1882. He studied at the Art Students League, traveled frequently to Europe, and settled with his family in Old Lyme, Connecticut, in 1915, where he remained an active art of the artists' colony.
Frame rubbing. There is one minor touch of inpaint in the red of the kimono at the lower center, approximately 1/8 inch round. There is no further restoration visible under UV light.
