Description: Astronomical Chart Or Diagram, in Which the Structure of The Solar System Is Exhibited at One View, 1857, published by Matthews & Warren Com’l Adv. Printing House 1857 Buffalo, N.Y. , William Emmons was lecturer on astronomy at Cary Collegiate Seminary. Shows in rudimentary form, the motion of the planets around the sun. Mounted on fabric with rods. Lithographed, colored and shellacked on a single very large sheet with side piping and original turned and ebonized wooden rods, 43 H x 41.5 W Inches , he eye-catching Sun centers the Solar System with eight planets in concentric circles starting with Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, then a bely with Vesta, Ceres, Pallas, and Juno, followed by Jupiter with its moons, Saturn with its rings , Uranus with six moons, and finally Neptune with a single moon. The Earth orbit depicts twelve monthly positions, including the Summer and Winter Solstices, Equinoxes, abbreviated Astrological signs, plus stages of the moon, a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse, and a comet’s parabolic orbit through the solar system. “Relative Magnitudes of the Planets.” shown graphically upper left. “An Astronomical Chart or Diagram, in which the Structure of the Solar System is exhibited in one view. by Wm. Emmons, Lecturer on Astronomy at Cary Collegiate Seminary.” in the upper right explains the velocity, density, and time of a complete orbit around the Sun for each Planet. Bottom right corner gives a “Tabular View of the Solar System” plus data on “Satellites or Moons”. “Comparative Distances of the Planets” is bottom center. Finally, in the lower left corner are “General Statements respecting the Solar System. / The Sun is the grand center of the Solar System. The earth , in form, nearly approaches to that of a globe; is a planetary body , suspended in empty space, surrounded on all sides by the starry heavens, and revolves around the sun once in a year.” with the Accompanying Key printed pamphlet (5th Edition) to the map

Condition Report: areas of water staining and foxing, some of the side piping has released from the edges, a few of the tacks are worn through on the fabric rods, original varnish layer, but generally good age appropriate condition
