Description: Willie Newton head & shoulders bronze of the steeplechaser Mandarin, used as the winner's trophy for the Brimpton Handicap Hurdle at Newbury, 24th November 1995, won by Eskimo Nel trained by John Spearing and ridden by David Bridgwater, set on a circular wooden base with race inscription presentation plaque, height 23.5cm. Mandarin's connection with Newbury is that he was the winner of the inaugural running of the Hennessy Gold Cup in 1957, and a race he would win again in 1961. A steeplechase bearing his name is run at Newbury annually. Mandarin also won famously with a broken bit the Grand Steeplechase de Paris; the 1962 Cheltenham Gold Cup, and the King George VI Chase twice.
