The first, accepting an invitation to a Philosophical Society meeting, and conveying plans to visit the ME coast next week. The second, explaining that painting will keep him from attending the World's Fair, and looking forward to meeting in Washington in December. Together 3 pages, 4to, personal stationery, written on separate sheets; faint scattered toning to each, horizontal folds. Notes: 11 September 1964: "I want you to know how very sorry Betsy and I are in not being with you on September 14 at the World Fair. I will still be here in Maine painting like mad--so I know you will understand. . . ."
