Born in 1901, Decaris studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where at 19 he became one of the youngest winners of the prestigious Concours de Rome. Decaris was an illustrator of luxury art books, as well as a stamp designer for French and African postal services. He also produced many plates and watercolors for his own pleasure, covering a wide variety of subject matter.
