A very fine Colonial work of the Chippendale period, this desk was an expensive and very time consuming piece to produce. The oxbow drawers are a work of art, wrought from very thick solid mahogany planks that were then hand sawn and carved extensively to create a perfect curvy hump along the top drawer. The grains were chosen with care, allowing the facade to flow smoothly in only subtle swirling that works to accentuate the concavity at the center of each drawer. This is a typical form for the North Shore of Massachusetts, the three shell interior with finial capped columns on the document drawers being a staple in finer slant front desks of the region. The lobed shell draped from the apron of the desk is a perfect inversion of the shells in the writing area, the apron lobes convex while the interior is concave, an interesting means of reinforcing the ebb and flow of the overall case that finds completion in the fully developed ogival bracket feet. Construction of the case is somewhat typical of the region. The drawers show tidy hand dovetailing of the fronts and backs, the bottom boards set in grooves along the edges and aligned perpendicular to the front, nailed along the back edge with a series of cut nails and reinforced along the front with three pine blocks. All drawers remain nearly untouched with original running strips, blocking, etc. and only repairs being the addition of tiny strips of pine to heal the shrink gaps in the bottom boards. The back of the case is entirely untouched with the two huge pine backboards set horizontally into a rabbet on either side and nailed along the edge with wrought roseheads. The underside of the chest shows entirely original feet other than the back left foot having a lower half of the facing replaced, all blocking being original and quite generous to support the weight of the case. Dovetailing along the top of the desk is left exposed. Inside of the case is a mahogany drawer blade backed by pine, the second drawer blade backed by a nearly full depth dust board - all runners are replaced, typical as these need to be shortened over time to reduce pressure against the backboards and drawer blades. The slant front drops over original hinges with mostly original hand cut screws. This is a very fine and well preserved piece, the early finish with a wonderful patina under wax. It has such great movement and flow, being a work that would have taken countless hours and great skill to complete. It will certainly be a treasured acquisition by any serious collector of American Chippendale.

Condition Report: Cracks to both sides of the case from age/shrinking. Left side of the case is lighter from sun exposure. Front left foot has a repaired crack in the facing, the back left foot with the lower half of the facing an old replacement. All blocking and feet are original (other than back left foot lower facing). Runners inside of the case are replaced, the drawer stops also replaced - these should eventually be shifted back half an inch or so to allow the drawers to completely close into the case; shrinkage over the years leaves the drawers just ever so slightly projected. Drawers are untouched in structure other than thin strips of pine added to the cracks in the bottom boards, all drawers retaining original brasses, original locks, bottom lip blocking and nails - escutcheons are replaced as well as a few round brass backplates. Cockbead molding on several drawers and lopers replaced. Drop lid is slightly warped, not noticeable when open, with light losses to both corners. Tiny interior drawer with replaced lock. Surface is early and nicely patinated with expected wear and finish loss throughout, probably not the original surface.

Buyers are responsible for unpacking, moving the item into their home and disposing of all packing materials all without assistance from the driver.

Plycon offers a professional and convenient white-glove delivery service that will bring the item into the ground floor room of your choice, unpackaged it for your inspection and remove all packing materials. The item is blanket-wrapped, which we generally find to be the safest and most careful method of shipments. If you select their service, they will contact you directly for payment and insurance election. This service generally costs $350-600 plus insurance depending on the location and shipment size.
FREIGHT DELIVERY (CANADA):
We now offer curbside shipments via common freight carrier to much of Canada! Simply contact us with your delivery address and two phone numbers for a quote. Buyers are responsible for arranging a customs broker and paying all customs/taxes/destination fees where applicable.
IN THE EVENT OF DAMAGE:
Damage is incredibly rare and due to very careful packing and preparation we have been fortunate to see only a small handful of damages. However, we understand the disappointment that can occur in this unlikely event and will work hard to help you through the situation.
Damage for items shipped with USPS, UPS, FedEx or DHL must be reported to us within 24 hours of signature confirmed delivery. We will require the buyer to send us photographs of the packaging and the damage to the item. The buyer will be required to have the item safely packaged again and mailed back to our shop with a pre-paid label. Once we safely receive the item, a refund will be made for the original purchase price plus any shipping via the original payment method.
For pre-quoted common freight carrier shipments, the buyer or representative of the buyer is responsible for being available at time of delivery to fully inspect the packaging and item for damage - under no circumstances should the item be refused, as doing so will void the insurance coverage. In the event of damage, call us immediately and note all damage on the bill of lading while the driver is still present take detailed pictures of the damaged packaging and item, send those images to us and we will assist you in filing the claim and working through the process. Concealed damage must be reported within 24 hours of delivery. In most cases, a representative of the insurance firm will need to inspect the item and packaging so be sure to retain all packing materials. The insurance provider and carrier reserve a "right to repair" a damaged item to industry standard. We do work hard to move claims along as quickly as possible, but please note that claims and/or repairs will be settled with the insurance company and carrier prior to any payout to the buyer.
For shipments with Plycon or any other carrier the buyer selects and pays directly, the terms of that carrier's insurance coverage will apply to the shipment and the buyer will be responsible for working through the claim process with the carrier. We are happy to provide paperwork or any other required documentation to assist in the claim process.
