American Chippendale Walnut Blanket Chest of Drawers, Pennsylvania c. 1780(393 views)
FINE AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT BLANKET CHEST OF DRAWERS
Pennsylvania c. 1780, preserved in nearly untouched condition
Item # 411DXP29A
This unusually striking American Chippendale blanket chest is distinguished by the open dovetailing of the case, this following from the sides through the feet to accentuate the hand crafted nature of the object. Pennsylvania craftsmen during the late 18th century built these pieces to be family heirlooms that could pass from one generation to the next and the quality of craftsmanship was something they took pride in and openly advertised - while other work centers sought to hide the dovetail, being simply a means of joining one plank to another, clientele in this region expected excellent joinery and examined it as part of the purchase process. As a result, the dovetail became something of an art form, this exercised to it's fullest in the presentation of the case. Remaining in nearly undisturbed condition with only minor repairs, the chest retains not only it's original brasses and all original hardware but also untouched feet - these are beautiful statements of purity in construction, the entire underside revealing only wooden peg joinery with no glue or nails. A back foot support and accompanying block are separated from the underside, allowing you to see exactly how the blocking perfectly fits together inside of the foot (see pictures in the slideshow). The drawers are constructed in the typical manner of the region, the poplar secondary woods hand dovetailed in the frame with the two-board bottom half-lapped at the joint, chamfered along the sides and set in grooves, allowing them to expand and contract freely. They retain their original brasses and locks, though it is possible the middle drawer has a replaced bottom since the two planks are not half-lapped and the end grains show some variation. Inside of the blanket chest is a sparse interior with a small wooden till on the left. The front of the till lifts to reveal a trio of secret drawers, the middle drawer with a period inscription that we find illegible. The lid retains it's original wrought iron strap hinges with original rosehead nails. Aesthetically, the chest exhibits very fine walnut planks in the front and sides; the subtle swirling of grains is pleasing and understated in the golden cognac hue of the planks. The three drawers have much more exuberant grain activity, these with more intense rays that immediately draw the eye. For the collector of fine American antiques with a passion for purity and form, this is an exceptional blanket chest of drawers that will certainly be a cherished part of your collection for a lifetime.
Top with a slight warp, this leading to a break out in the molding on both corners - both appear to have been repaired at some point, but this has since come apart again. Loss at right corner molding, though the piece is retained (as shown in images). Oval lock escutcheon possibly a period replacement (not matching the style of the rest of the hardware); all other hardware (brasses, locks, hinges) entirely original. Original key retained, though strap lock no longer functional. Rosehead nails in left hinge have lost their grip (two absent rosehead nails retained), leaving only one nail to bear the weight of the lid when open. Feet and all blocking entirely original - back left foot support and adjoining block are separate but retained (see images). Patching to till lid and till molding; left bottom drawer with patch corner, middle drawer bottom possibly replaced. Early surface, probably not original but wonderfully patinated with many layers of wax preserving the surface. Top with scars and circular stains. A simply outstanding chest - the only thing that needs real consideration is the break out of the molding at the top corners, as this may or may not be able to be restored. The other notes above are very minor flaws, the chest remaining in a very pure and nearly untouched state of repair. We have 74 detailed images of this blanket chest available on our primary website.

FREIGHT AND WHITE GLOVE DELIVERY (DOMESTIC):
Most furniture and oversize items include a quote or estimate, which outlines the estimated cost for curbside freight delivery anywhere in the lower 48 States* via common freight carrier, and generally arrives to most locations in 10-15 business days. The item is professionally packaged in-house, palletized and shipped on a tractor trailer with lift gate curbside delivery service. Buyers are notified by the carrier of the delivery date and must make arrangements to receive and inspect the goods (goods left unattended at a residence may not qualify for insurance coverage in the very rare event of damage). Buyers are responsible for unpacking, moving the item into their home and disposing of all packing materials all without assistance from the driver.
* Some areas do not qualify for pre-quoted shipments, including residences with ferry-access, ultra-rural locations, or locations with truck access issues. We reserve the right to disqualify an address from pre-quote under any circumstances upon receiving notification of your delivery address; in these situations, we will offer to simply cancel the order for you, see if a pickup at the nearest freight terminal is a practical option, revise a quote for your approval or offer a quote from a different carrier for your approval.
Some items are not pre-quoted and will require a formal shipping quote. Simply contact us with your delivery address and phone number for a quote within 24 hours.

Plycon offers a professional and convenient white-glove delivery service that will bring the item into the ground floor room of your choice, unpackaged it for your inspection and remove all packing materials. The item is blanket-wrapped, which we generally find to be the safest and most careful method of shipments. IN THE EVENT OF DAMAGE:
Damage is incredibly rare and due to very careful packing and preparation we have been fortunate to see only a small handful of damages. However, we understand the disappointment that can occur in this unlikely event and will work hard to help you through the situation.
Damage for items shipped with USPS, UPS, FedEx or DHL must be reported to us within 24 hours of signature confirmed delivery. We will require the buyer to send us photographs of the packaging and the damage to the item. The buyer will be required to have the item safely packaged again and mailed back to our shop with a pre-paid label. Once we safely receive the item, a refund will be made for the original purchase price plus any shipping via the original payment method.
For pre-quoted common freight carrier shipments, the buyer or representative of the buyer is responsible for being available at time of delivery to fully inspect the packaging and item for damage - under no circumstances should the item be refused, as doing so will void the insurance coverage. In the event of damage, call us immediately and note all damage on the bill of lading while the driver is still present take detailed pictures of the damaged packaging and item, send those images to us and we will assist you in filing the claim and working through the process. Concealed damage must be reported within 24 hours of delivery. In most cases, a representative of the insurance firm will need to inspect the item and packaging so be sure to retain all packing materials. The insurance provider and carrier reserve a "right to repair" a damaged item to industry standard. We do work hard to move claims along as quickly as possible, but please note that claims and/or repairs will be settled with the insurance company and carrier prior to any payout to the buyer.
For shipments with Plycon or any other carrier the buyer selects and pays directly, the terms of that carrier's insurance coverage will apply to the shipment and the buyer will be responsible for working through the claim process with the carrier. We are happy to provide paperwork or any other required documentation to assist in the claim process.
