Description: An unusual and beautifully hand made Hungarian bejeweled silver tureen, with Bacchanalian wine and fertility themes, made by a goldsmith and dedicated to his professor, the conical cover with a finial in the form of a satyr holding a chalice with an old European rose cut diamond, over bands of cabochon chrysoprase gemstones and coral, above fluting leading to a repousse band of fish among the waves, the body of the tureen elaborately decorated in repousse with four different male (likely Bacchus, the god of wine) and mermaid couples, in erotic pursuit, among clusters of chrysoprase gemstone grapes and corkscrew vine tendrils on a stippled ground, the interior of the tureen in vermeil (gold wash over silver), raised on four stylized Art Deco feet , Budapest, circa 1924. Inscription in Hungarian on the band below the cover reads: * KESZITETTEM + EZEN * BOROSKUPAT * AKKOR * MILD¦N * NAGYON * DRAGAVOLT * AKENYER * ES ABOR * KISS FERENC TV¦STANR BUDAPEST 1924*. We believe it is a dedication from the maker of the piece to his goldsmith professor, Ferenc Kiss.
