Description: Charley Harper (1922 - 2007), "Potbelly", Original painting, Oil on canvas, signed by the artist in the lower right, framed. While many of Harper's best known works are prints, this charming piece is an original Harper painting.He captures a mischievous raccoon eating maize from Native American pottery, which was excavated from Turpin Farm near Fort Ancient in Ohio. The work is in excellent condition. -- A Cincinnati-based American Modernist, Harper was best known for his highly stylized works depicting wildlife. He studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he later taught as well. During his career, Harper illustrated numerous books and magazines, notably "The Golden Book of Biology". He also created many works for organizations such as the National Park Service, the Cincinnati Zoo, and Everglades National Park.
