Description: Charley Harper (1922 - 2007), "Potbelly", Original painting, Oil on canvas, signed lower right, framed. This charming work is an original Harper painting depicting a raccoon filling his belly with maize pilfered from a Fort Ancient Native American pottery vessel, which was excavated from Turpin Farm. Excellent Condition. -- A Cincinnati-based American Modernist, he was best known for his highly stylized works depicting wildlife. He studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he later taught as well. During his career, Harper illustrated numerous books and magazines, notably "The Golden Book of Biology". He also created many works for organizations such as the National Park Service, the Cincinnati Zoo, and Everglades National Park.
