ENGLISH GEORGIAN INLAID MAHOGANY TALL CASE CLOCK, Finely painted dial tribute to Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson (1758 - 1805) "England Expects Every Man To Do His Duty"
Item # C102308
An intricately detailed work, this fine English Georgian tall case clock crafted during the first years of the 19th Century is distinguished by it's extensive satinwood stringer inlays - a work strongly influenced by the Neoclassicism of the period, the piece features unusually bold Corinthian columns flanking the shaft and in pairs flanking the glazed door. Both of the oversized columns flanking the shaft are inlaid between each flute, a detail requiring inordinate skill and precision. The boxed tympanum hosting the broken arch pediment is substantial, three ball-and-spire brass finials set along the corners and center over the tapering inlaid plinth and arched glazed door. This opens on original hinges to reveal a most precisely enameled dial with a moon-phase dial painted with a British warship on smooth seas, a nostalgic cottage in the woods and both moon phases. Opposing peacocks preside over the Arabic and Roman numeral dial with spandrels of maidens bringing the fruit of the vine, flowers of the field, wheat of the harvest and wool of the loom around a painted tribute to Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson with his name beneath the proud portraiture and ships at sea in the distance. Beneath this is painted "England expects every man to do his duty" in bold capital letters. The shaft of the clock is veneered in such a smooth grained mahogany around the sides and most of the front, set sharply against the most vibrant crotch-mahogany veneers utilized in the pendulum door. This shapely door gently simulates the complex movement of the pediment, culminating in an applied carved acorn finial above the tip of the door set just beneath the three shell inlays of the neck. The door opens on original hinges to allow access to the weights and pendulum. The base of the clock is neatly framed in double stringer inlays with satinwood inlaid spandrels around a brilliant crotch mahogany panel, the chamfered corners finely inlaid under the curvy molding of the apron. The clock rests over replaced ogival bracket feet, these being appropriate but late 20th Century additions. As a result of the restoration work, this fine clock has a warm and consistent surface with a condition throughout that is most pleasing. It is a substantial piece that will certainly be a cherished addition to any classical or Georgian home.
Measurements: Approximately 94" H including finials (84 1/2" H to top of arch); 24 1/2" W x 11 1/8" D
Condition Report: Extensive restoration resulting in a gorgeous surface condition throughout. Restoration work includes rebuilding of pediment, replaced feet, adding blocking and support in interior, three pieces of replaced wood in backboards and veneer replacements/patching. Movement originality to the case is unknown, as the original shelf blocks were replaced with new pine so holes cannot be matched - however, the hollows carved in the vertical struts in front of the movement shelf do match up with the square of the dial. Movement functioning when tested with pendulum swing, not tested with weights (gears will need to be rewound to test with weights). Numerals on dial are touched up with later black paint, the rest of the dial not examined under UV for inpainting. Pendulum door has a bowed concavity from age and shrinking. Old cracking/repairs to sides of case above rear feet. No key, includes a replaced winding key. FREIGHT AND WHITE GLOVE DELIVERY (DOMESTIC):
Most furniture and oversize items include a quote or estimate, which outlines the estimated cost for curbside freight delivery anywhere in the lower 48 States* via common freight carrier, and generally arrives to most locations in 10-15 business days. The item is professionally packaged in-house, palletized and shipped on a tractor trailer with lift gate curbside delivery service. Buyers are notified by the carrier of the delivery date and must make arrangements to receive and inspect the goods (goods left unattended at a residence may not qualify for insurance coverage in the very rare event of damage). Buyers are responsible for unpacking, moving the item into their home and disposing of all packing materials all without assistance from the driver.
* Some areas do not qualify for pre-quoted shipments, including residences with ferry-access, ultra-rural locations, or locations with truck access issues. We reserve the right to disqualify an address from pre-quote under any circumstances upon receiving notification of your delivery address; in these situations, we will offer to simply cancel the order for you, see if a pickup at the nearest freight terminal is a practical option, revise a quote for your approval or offer a quote from a different carrier for your approval.

IN THE EVENT OF DAMAGE:
Damage is incredibly rare and due to very careful packing and preparation we have been fortunate to see only a small handful of damages. However, we understand the disappointment that can occur in this unlikely event and will work hard to help you through the situation.
Damage for items shipped with USPS, UPS, FedEx or DHL must be reported to us within 24 hours of signature confirmed delivery. We will require the buyer to send us photographs of the packaging and the damage to the item. The buyer will be required to have the item safely packaged again and mailed back to our shop with a pre-paid label. Once we safely receive the item, a refund will be made for the original purchase price plus any shipping via the original payment method.
For pre-quoted common freight carrier shipments, the buyer or representative of the buyer is responsible for being available at time of delivery to fully inspect the packaging and item for damage - under no circumstances should the item be refused, as doing so will void the insurance coverage. In the event of damage, call us immediately and note all damage on the bill of lading while the driver is still present take detailed pictures of the damaged packaging and item, send those images to us and we will assist you in filing the claim and working through the process. Concealed damage must be reported within 24 hours of delivery. In most cases, a representative of the insurance firm will need to inspect the item and packaging so be sure to retain all packing materials. The insurance provider and carrier reserve a "right to repair" a damaged item to industry standard. We do work hard to move claims along as quickly as possible, but please note that claims and/or repairs will be settled with the insurance company and carrier prior to any payout to the buyer.
For shipments with Plycon or any other carrier the buyer selects and pays directly, the terms of that carrier's insurance coverage will apply to the shipment and the buyer will be responsible for working through the claim process with the carrier. We are happy to provide paperwork or any other required documentation to assist in the claim process.
