Fostoria Glass Rope Twist Newport Lamp(255 views)
Description: Item 4706. Rope Twist Glass Round Base Kerosene lamp. Late 19th century. Size: 18” tall and the base is 7.5” in diameter. Many people believe that this form was made by Baccarat but this particular lamp was made by Fostoria Company; called the Old Colony line and it came with a round or a square base. A few years ago Barbara Streisand visited our gallery and purchased all the square base Fostoria lamps we had in stock. The condition of this lamp is excellent. If wired for electricity, the wire must be attached on the outside of the lamp: the shaft is solid and cannot be drilled. Commonly called a “Newport Lamp” these pieces were generally used by the “Summer Colony” on either side of the bed. Many used fabric shades that looked liked draped handkerchiefs with a kerosene fueled burner and chimney. One wonders why more of Newport’s “Cottages” did not catch fire! the quality of the glass is excellent with the lamp looking like it is made of ice!
